My Approach

I have a profound respect for each person’s individuality, autonomy, and expertise in their own life and life experience.  I value you as a person.  I believe that therapy works best within a supportive, trusting, and safe therapeutic relationship that we create together.  At its best, I believe therapy is a relationship characterized by warmth, caring, and compassion, safety and mutual respect.  I approach therapy from a holistic perspective and incorporate mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual components as needed for each individual client.  Carl Rogers inspired my work as a person-centered therapist, and I also incorporate into my practice Mindfulness, ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), Life Review, Narrative, and Solution Focused interventions, to name just a few, as appropriate.

Therapy is a process that allows you to discuss your specific concerns in a confidential* setting.  We will work together collaboratively to identify your concerns, explore options, identify goals, and decide on what action to take.  Your life experience and the environments in which you live and work are taken into account at all times to ensure goals and actions make sense within the context of your life.  While the work we do together in a session is important and sets the foundation for change, the work that you do outside the session is equally important to developing new skills and sustaining change.

Outcomes of therapy vary with each individual, the issues addressed, and their goals.  Some common benefits reported by my clients include increased autonomy, clarity, personal growth, and emotional expression; reduced anxiety, stress and fear; and increased ability to connect with others and themselves.  Perhaps the most common experience reported by clients I have worked with is a renewed sense of hope and new perspective.

*Limits of confidentiality are discussed in the initial consultation session.
